Old Capitol City Roller Derby: Drills & Skills

Hi, I’m Ginger

I am the Head Coach of Old Capitol City Roller Derby in Iowa City, Iowa. I have been playing roller derby for more than 9 years and skating with OCCRD for 2. I played for JRDA’s Team USA West in 2015 and the AAU’s Central Cyclones for the 2019 Junior Olympics. I have coached junior teams in the past and I have been a Training & Coaching board member in Iowa City for one year. I have great love and respect for this league and I can’t wait to take on this new role!

My Goals for this season:

  • I want to make practice as valuable as possible.
    • Every skater has a reason they come to practice and I want every skater to leave feeling like they’ve achieved that goal.
  • I want my skaters to feel seen.
    • I don’t want any skater to feel left behind. While ability levels vary, every skater should have the information and modifications to participate in practice.
  • I want to have a unified goal.
    • Whether we are looking to improve our WFTDA ranking, exercise as a group, or simply spend time with our friends, I want everyone to be on the same page about what we are working toward.

This Season, I would like to cover:

  • Playing against penalties. (Clockwise/stop blocks, forearms, multiplayers, etc.)
  • Blocking legally with arms.
  • Fortifying the tripod.
  • Single-blocker and multi-blocker offense.

The purpose of this blog is to publicize my training strategy for my OCCRD skaters and for other WFTDA training staffs. Please feel free to comment on posts or reach out directly via email or Facebook.
